What the exam asks

The TLC names ten topics and does not publish how many questions each one gets. These are the questions in TLC Drill for each topic. Geography gets the most, because it is the part candidates cannot learn from a rule book.

  • Government 12 questions
  • Licensing 28 questions
  • Vehicle requirements 28 questions
  • Passenger solicitation 56 questions
  • Customer service and service refusal 28 questions
  • Accessible dispatch 24 questions
  • Proper conduct 24 questions
  • Vision Zero and safety 32 questions
  • Penalties and driver programs 24 questions
  • Geography 104 questions

Made for this exam, not any exam

A real map for geography

The roads, bridges and tunnels are drawn from NYC Open Data and U.S. Census data and stored in the app. All six kinds of geography question are there: best route, compass direction, points of interest, connections, where a road starts and ends, and reading a map.

Your 90-day clock

Enter your application date and see the last day to register for the courses (day 85), the last safe day to pass the exam (day 87) and the day the application expires (day 90), with reminders if you want them.

A plan if you do not pass

PSI emails failed candidates a summary of what to study. Mark those topics and get a 1, 3 or 7 day plan. You can sit again after 24 hours, and each attempt costs $49 again.

Your language, all of it

Questions, answers, explanations and lessons in English, Spanish, Russian and Bengali. English is one tap away on every question, so you learn the terms you will hear at work.

Exams that feel like the exam

Four numbered 80-question exams that never share a question, new random exams, and a 20-question quick exam. Answers stay hidden until the end. The clock stops when you close the app.

Current numbers, with their source

Fares, fines and deadlines come from the current TLC pages and rules, and each question shows its section and check date. The 2019 study guide is older, and where it differs the app follows the newer source.

Questions

Is TLC Drill from the TLC or PSI?

No. TLC Drill is an independent study app. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by the NYC Taxi & Limousine Commission or PSI.

Are these the questions on the exam?

No. We write our own questions from public TLC documents, and we never copy TLC practice exams or other apps. Practice results do not promise a pass.

What do I get to use during the exam?

PSI gives you a five-borough street atlas, the Manhattan Address Key, paper and a pencil. See the Candidate Bulletin.

Which languages does the exam come in?

English, Spanish, Bengali, Urdu, Russian, Simplified Chinese and Arabic. TLC Drill covers English, Spanish, Russian and Bengali today.

Do I need an account or an internet connection?

No. Everything is in the app and your progress stays on your iPhone. We do not collect any data. See the privacy policy.
